…bring to a boil, then cover and simmer…
Those instructions appear in about 90% of all recipes, so why the hell can’t technology help! I’d like to have a little device that I place in a pan of food that will beep me when it comes to a boil. Is that so much to ask. Then I can go watch Stargate for a few more minutes.
Even better, I wish my stove had a probe that would sense the boil, and then turn things down to simmer. I can’t imagine life any longer without this, seriously.

There is something I saw once in a food catalog… It was some sort of ceramic or glass plate that you placed in the bottom of a pot of water. Once the water got to a boil, the plate would rattle loudly, alerting you from the other room or wherever that the water was boiling. Sort of like the whistle on a tea kettle. No idea where I saw it, but it’s probably on the web somewhere.

Actually, when you think about it, all you’d need is an oversized kettle. A whistling kettle lid for your pots.
I can’t see this being very hard to do at all, and can potentially be made to standard pot sizes.
